The Centre for Access to Services in English for the Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec (CASE-MCQ) is the happy partner in a fun new project that the Community Learning Centre from Drummondville Elementary School and Literacy In Action has brought to the area.
The program consists of a series of workshops for parents or caregivers of children aged 5 to 12. Each session the families will be using a different book as inspiration for a child-friendly recipe. Books to Belly! is a program designed to encourage essential skills by offering a series of literacy-related activities for parents or caregivers and their children (aged 5 to 12), that can be replicated in a home setting.
The sessions consist of a storytelling activity, followed by a participatory cooking workshop for the whole family. The sessions are designed to be easy, interactive, and role model different ways that we can practice literacy skills in daily life. The aim of these workshops is to foster a positive relationship between families and the local school, and to create a sense of accomplishment within each participant.
Each activity is coordinated by our animator, Karine Brochu. Karine, an experienced cook, works with the families to read the story and then get down to the task of creating tasty things to eat together and take home!
We have already had several successful groups in the month of April and look forward to another two sessions in the month of April. If you’d like to know more about joining in whether you are a parent, grandparent or the caregiver of a child from the area give us a call: 819 850-5560. Or email Karine at kaybrochu@gamil.com.
Two further sessions were held on May 21st and May the 28th at the Community Centre, 1550, rue Saint Aimé, Drummondville.
